Hope of Christmas

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:6-7
This passage brings so much hope for us! Imagine, for a second, that you were living before Jesus lived. This prophecy about a coming Savior was written 700 years before Jesus. Imagine the anticipation! The kingdom of Judah was being threatened with destruction from Assyria and Egypt, but the Prince of Peace and Mighty God was coming and his reign would be Everlasting!

Now come back to our present lives. What we need most is to be saved from ourselves. Sin is rooted from within us, and it disguises lies for truth and truth for lies. Thus comes the superlative necessity for a Wonderful Counselor. The Spirit of living God is our helper! He counsels us to discern between truth and lies. We have hope! And even better...there will be no end!

Reflect today on the significance, power, and beauty of the hope we have in God - our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
